A time to say thanks – National Volunteer Week

We at Benojo know just how important volunteers are to hardworking not-for-profits and charities. So it seems only fitting that we pay tribute to them and say a big thanks for their invaluable efforts during National Volunteer Week, which this year runs from May 11-17.

Giving makes you happy

This year’s theme is ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’ driven by the belief that those who volunteer make others happy, and research suggesting that people who volunteer are generally happier.

There are over six million Australians who donate their time each year, who collectively contribute $200 billion to the Australian economy. That’s a lot to feel good about.

Get involved

The other objective of National Volunteer Week is to inspire others to volunteer. Whether you’re donating a few hours of your time to a one-off project or regularly give your time to a cause or charity, there’s plenty of ways you and your business can get involved. Consider giving your time to a cause that you are passionate about or an organisation that can benefit most from your particular skills.

A different approach

Volunteering – particularly when it comes to corporate programs – need not be conventional. In fact, there are various options beyond the norm your business and staff can help out with. Here’s a few:

Conservation

If conservation is a cause close to your heart, Landcare Australia’s Adventure Conservation program – which is open to corporate volunteers – may be one to try. Fun and challenging, it will take you into the wild with projects that include elements of rafting, bushwalking and kayaking (alongside conservation work such as weeding and planting trees).

Help others

For some team building with a twist, Oz Harvest’s Cooking for a Cause brings employees together for an interactive cooking class, where they prepare meals with donated surplus food, under the guidance of a professional chef, and turn it into restaurant quality meals, which are then donated to some of the country’s most in need.

Work with animals

What’s not to love about helping care for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens? Groups like Animal League NSW and the state offices of the RSPCA offer corporate volunteering in different capacities - from days on-site working with animals at a shelter to helping out at national events.

Regardless of what capacity you volunteer in, National Volunteer Week is a time to say thanks to all that do.
